Project Background

Located in El Monte’s high-density residential River East neighborhood, Zamora Park is a 4.48-acre existing public park. While considered the park and recreational anchor of the community, Zamora Park, built in 1969, is underused due to outdated amenities. In February 2017, community members working with First 5 LA presented an assessment of Zamora Park to City officials documenting the most pressing concerns of the park, including out-of-date playgrounds, deteriorating tables and benches, and limited lighting that creates unsafe conditions for park users.
The Zamora Park Renovation project will transform this community space into a multi-benefit asset, with over 100 shade trees, stormwater capture elements, walking paths, fitness equipment, new playgrounds, a refurbished basketball court, a splash pad, and an enhanced bus stop where approximately 50 children catch the bus daily. The renovation will also better integrate the two well-used community buildings on site, a community center and art center, into the park space. |

Stormwater Planters
These stormwater planters will help capture and treat all rainwater that falls on the site. They will allow water to collect and infiltrate through specialized soil and gravel that will remove pollutants before the water continues down through the soil and into the underground aquifer. The stormwater planters will help keep our watershed healthy.
